Optical Attenuators for Fiber Power Management

An optical attenuator introduces a controlled amount of loss into a fiber optic link. It is used when the optical power arriving at a receiver is higher than the acceptable operating range or when a technician needs to reproduce specific signal conditions during testing.

Fiber optic attenuators can help manage receiver power, balance optical levels and support controlled testing without replacing the complete fiber link. The correct product must match the fiber type, connector interface, polish, attenuation value and operating requirements of the system.

How Fixed and Variable Optical Attenuators Work

Fixed Fiber Optic Attenuators
 
A fixed fiber optic attenuator provides a defined level of signal reduction within a fiber connection. Fixed attenuators are commonly used in permanent installations where the required optical loss has already been determined.
 
PFP currently offers fixed attenuator products for FC, LC, SC and ST connector applications. The collection includes multimode configurations and selected singlemode products, such as the SC/UPC singlemode fixed attenuator.
 
When selecting a fixed optical attenuator, verify the required dB value rather than automatically choosing the highest available attenuation. The correct value should be based on measured optical power, the system link budget and the receiver’s permitted input range.

Variable Optical Attenuators
 
A variable optical attenuator is used when the application requires a configurable level of optical loss for testing, system setup or changing operating conditions. It provides greater flexibility than a fixed attenuator when technicians need to evaluate performance at different signal levels.
 

The current PFP collection includes FC multimode, FC/APC singlemode and other multimode variable attenuator products. Review the specifications of each product to confirm its attenuation range, adjustment method, connector configuration and fiber compatibility.
 

Variable optical attenuators should not automatically be described as digital or electronic VOAs. Those terms generally refer to laboratory instruments with electronic control and should only be used if PFP offers that specific equipment.

How to Choose a Fiber Optic Attenuator

Choosing the right fiber optic attenuator requires more than matching the connector shape. Before ordering, confirm the attenuator type, fiber mode, connector interface, polish, required dB value and system operating conditions.

Fixed or Variable Attenuation

​

Choose a fixed optical attenuator when the required signal reduction is known and will remain consistent. Choose a variable optical attenuator when the application requires configurable attenuation during testing, system setup or performance evaluation.

Confirm how the individual product is adjusted or configured before ordering. A product described as variable should not be assumed to have digital or electronic control.

Singlemode or Multimode Fiber

​

The attenuator must be compatible with the fiber system. Select a singlemode fiber optic attenuator for a singlemode link and a multimode fiber optic attenuator for the appropriate multimode system.

Do not select an attenuator based only on connector type. Two products can use similar FC, LC or SC housings while being designed for different fiber modes and optical conditions.

FC, LC, SC and ST Fiber Optic Attenuators

PFP offers several common fiber optic attenuator connector formats:
 

  • FC fiber optic attenuators use a threaded interface commonly found in test, industrial and precision fiber applications.

  • LC fiber optic attenuators provide a compact connector format for network and equipment connections.

  • SC fiber optic attenuators use a push-pull connector interface found in telecom, broadband and data communication systems.

  • ST fiber optic attenuators provide a bayonet-style interface used in selected multimode, industrial and legacy fiber systems.

APC and UPC Connector Polish

Connector polish must match the installed interface. APC and UPC connections are different optical formats and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Before ordering an LC APC attenuator, LC UPC attenuator, SC APC attenuator, SC UPC attenuator, FC APC attenuator or FC UPC attenuator, verify the connector and polish required by the equipment, adapter or fiber assembly.

Attenuation Level in dB
 

Attenuation is measured in decibels. Depending on the product, fixed attenuators may be available in values such as 1 dB, 3 dB, 5 dB, 10 dB or other attenuation levels.
 

The correct value cannot be determined from connector type alone. Measure the optical power at the intended installation point and compare it with the receiver manufacturer’s permitted operating range.
 

Too little attenuation may leave excessive optical power at the receiver. Too much attenuation can reduce the signal below the level required for reliable operation.

Wavelength and Product Specifications

Confirm that the optical attenuator is suitable for the wavelength and power requirements of the fiber system. Applications may operate at wavelengths such as 850 nm, 1310 nm or 1550 nm, but compatibility must be verified using the individual product specifications.

Also confirm the mating configuration, attenuation tolerance, fiber mode, polish and applicable technical standards before installation.
